The Gilbert FFA chapter was proud to send 35 students to the FFA State Leadership Conference on the campus of Iowa State in Ames this week.

A total of 7,000 students statewide took part. The participants engaged in leadership workshops, listened to motivational speakers and state FFA ...officers, and competed in career and leadership development events.

Gilbert’s own Josie Van Gorp, Alex Weary, Lily Shedarowich, Calleigh Pudenz, Ava Klatt, and Jaden Rydl were chapter exhibit members. They received a silver award for their display of the 15 acre FFA test plot.

Another component of the conference was a career show where students networked with college representatives and businesses in the hope of making connections that could possibly lead to future relationships.

As some of you may know, this year our students at Gilbert Elementary have begun learning all about the The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In late March, Principal Edwards had the idea of putting together a video of some of the things the students have learned and asked them about their ...favorite habits.

Mrs. Edwards showed the video to her students and staff at an assembly.

We stopped by Mr. Smith’s middle school ELP class on Monday to see some of our 8th graders take part in the Egg Drop Challenge.

This is part of Mr. Smith’s Junk Drawer Challenges. Each week, students are given an engineering challenge by going through the engineering process to meet a ...certain set of criteria. The students are able to use anything from the variety of “junk” on the tables throughout the room.

For the Egg Drop Challenge, students needed to create a container that would protect an egg from both dropping and impact. Starting at 10 feet, Mrs. Reid dropped the eggs in 10-foot increments up to 40 feet.

The protective cases then went through impact tests, such as throwing, kicking, and hitting with a baseball bat to see which could successfully keep an egg from breaking.

Some of the materials used by the students included tiny planks of wood, the shell of a globe, wires, cardboard, and much more.

Believe it or not, several of the eggs survived the tests. All of the enclosures were creatively built, and it was fun to see the kids get excited about this challenge.

Sometimes, Eden Lohrbach isn’t even fair. Playing at the Ames Golf and Country Club today against ADM in a meet, the Gilbert senior and 2-time state champion made a HOLE-IN-ONE on the par-3 14th hole. The ace moved her to 3-under through 2 holes.

Our golf coaches planned today’s Tiger Tailgate with one hope — to shine a light on the talent in the program with fellow students and community members lining the fairways and around the greens to watch.

Consider it a success.
