Gilbert Middle School will be represented by not one, but two teams at the 2025 Science Olympiad state event, which is set to take place in April.
GMS advisors Amanda Ostrem and Amanda Takes took the large group of Science Olympiad students to Mount Vernon for a competition this past weekend, and Gilbert placed in 13 of the 23 events between its two teams.
Gilbert finished first or second in the following events:
- Air Trajectory (first and second)
- Codebusters (second)
- Crime Busters (first)
- Disease Detectives (second)
- Dynamic Planet (first)
- Ecology (first)
- Experimental Design (second)
- Fossils (first)
- Helicopter (second)
- Meteorology (second)
- Mission Possible (second)
- Optics (first and second)
- Wind Power (first)
Mrs. Ostrem explains that the Science Olympiad is comparable to a track and field meet, but for science. Instead of running, jumping, or throwing, students compete in scientific events in all different disciplines. She says just like track has sprints, relays, hurdles, and field events, Science Olympiad has events in biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and earth science.
Each team is allowed up to 15 students, as well as two alternates, with members competing in a variety of events. Some events are tests, while others are labs or involve such things as building towers, helicopters, turbines, or cars, among other things.
We are so proud of our GMS students who dedicate their time and energy to Science Olympiad, and we wish them all good luck at the state competition later this spring.
