Lifetime Fitness Center
Youth Strength and Conditioning Program

The Lifetime Fitness Center’s Youth Strength and Condition Program will be a continuous class designed to increase the physical strength and conditioning of children ages 8-18. The focus will be on preparing the athletes for their respective sports by developing muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, mental toughness, and body composition. This class will not be sports specific but the trainer will know who plays what sport and will tailor each workout to their specific sport. The workouts will also include aspects of team building and leadership that they can carry over into their sports and everyday life. For some of the kids it will just be a way to have fun with friends and get some physical activity in their life.

The class will be held twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30PM at the Lifetime Fitness Center in Story City. Exercises will include explosion, speed, agility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, strength, and flexibility. We will accomplish this by doing primarily bodyweight exercises at varied intensities using plyometric exercises, agility boards, agility ladders, cones, medicine balls, and resistance bands. Each workout and individual exercise will be scaled to each individual’s physical ability.

Form and technique will be a main focus for all athletes involved in the program. Building the correct form for exercises at a young age will prepare them for heavier weightlifting programs in the future and help prevent injury whether it is acute or long term. If the trainer feels an athlete is ready to incorporate weights into their workout we will do so. The biggest change from middle school to high school athletes and high school to college athletes is size, strength, and endurance. Getting your young athletes in shape will allow them to be a step ahead of the competition and more prepared for the next stage of their athletic careers.

The class will be taught by Grant Mastbergen, who graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology – Exercise Science. Grant also is a Certified Personal Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine. He has years of experience training children including an internship doing sports performance training for ages 8-18.

The class will be $50 dollars a month per athlete for two workouts per week. As stated above the classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:30PM at the Lifetime Fitness Center in Story City. Athletes will be able to sign up on a month to month basis and start/end their attendance based on their sports season as they please but a one month notice is required before suspending or canceling the membership.
